How is that irrelevant? Quotes from the manga are actually the top resource point in the whole franchise. You can believe Goku is stronger than Gohan as much as you want, it doesn't make it true.

It's a shame, Goku. I wanted to debate another top-tier debater like you, but we agree on this topic, so that'll have to wait. It would be best if we entertain the others by talking about those manga quotes that they hold so dear.

When Cell refers to Gohan's 'strength', you'll see that he's specifically talking about speed. Strength and speed don't increase in parallel; Gohan was just faster than Goku, not stronger. Even then, it would be in Goku's character to hold back somewhat in order to let Gohan watch the fight and get a good grasp of Cell's style before he transformed into a SSJ2. Goku acted helpless because he wanted to trigger that transformation.

alright, gohan is stronger. I still do think that goku rivals gohan.
